I finally finished my Hope Valley string quilt!
Oh, it feels like I have been working on this one forever. I started it more than a year ago with plans to make a quilt for Finley's room. I was planning on designing her room around this, but then Joel Dewberry's Modern Meadow came out, and I made her baby quilt out of that. I pushed the string blocks to the side for the time being, knowing that I'd be back to them soon enough.
This one was a tough quilt for me to make at times. The string blocks are tedious and super repetitive, but I am glad I persevered. I really love the finish quilt. It will be another one for Finley's big girl bed someday. Remember, I even made a matching pillow!

pattern: paper pieced string block (8" finished)
fabrics: Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt and Kona coal (quilt top), Kona raisin (binding), a gray Target flat sheet for backing
dimensions: need to measure still, but it is an oversized twin
quilting: free motion quilting in a meandering pattern by me

ReplyDeleteDid the sheet wash OK for the back? I've yet to use a sheet and never prewash my fabrics so wondered how it would shrink with the rest of the quilt. And, did you happen to use a sheet that was a cotton poly blend or just cotton?

ReplyDeleteThis looks lovely, I love how you picked up the raisin in the binding - such a pretty colour for a girl. I am like you, I have a Hunky Dory jelly roll that is bugging me to make a twin quilt for Scarlett but she'll be in her cot for another year or two so it seems so premature to make it. And like you, I see new collections coming out and my head starts reeling (I also have some Its A Hoot stashed but have since gone off it a bit!). I really loved Griffith Park but have resisted buying any.

ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely in love with this quilt. So so so so beautiful. Can you tell how much fabric you needed of the Hope Valley line? I ask because I never know how much to buy of fabric I need for a quilt. You know you don't want to run out of fabric and cannot buy it anymore...

ReplyDeleteOh, love it! I started a string quilt about a year and a half ago but it's is sitting all lonely waiting to get worked on again. I started it with the intention of working on it between projects so it wouldn't be so tedious, but now it seems I just go from one project the ntext to the next and the poor pink and yellow and orange strings are all forgotten in the corner. Maybe I'll get them back out...when I finish the 3 things I've got going at the moment! ;)

ReplyDeleteI love your string quilt. I just made 20 string blocks for a string block exchange and can't wait to see what I get in return. I finally have enough Hope Valley to make a queen quilt. I got the pattern from OhFransson's web site for free. It uses two sheets. One on the top and one for the backing.

I used more than a FQ set of Hope Valley to make my string quilt. If you are buying some, I'd recommend a half yard bundle. :)
